It’s a social experiment that hasn’t worked and its time to say goodbye. To what extent, do you agree to the above statement.
Over the last decade, there has been an exponential growth in the popularity of various social media platforms. This trend gave rise to several concomitant concerns in the society and hence, many demand such media to be banned. In this essay, I strongly contend this statement to be legitimate emphasizing the gravity of these concerns.
Rather than merely serving as a channel for effortless communications and knowledge sharing, internet networks have recently become the epicentre for political tensions. The contents in these platforms can be of extremist views which could evoke communal and religious unrests. With increased polarisation between people of various religions or communities, their peaceful coexistence could suffer. This is particularly true as many separatists actively use social media groups to create conflicts and agitations for their political motives.
Moreover, billions of posts are being shared in various social platforms all over the world and they are not strictly scrutinized for their contents. Many people blindly trust such posts as facts and fall prey to various scams to lose their valuable money. Not only are many contents misleading but some also have inappropriate and abusive elements in them. Many people exploit the constraints in implementing proper controls over online mediums by widely using these to harass their enemies and to publicly defame them. Hence, due to the vastness and the large-scale influence of such networks, majority of the issues that they cause are insurmountable. Therefore, it is highly recommended to ban social media for the common good.
In conclusion, it is advocated by many people to ban social media due to their adverse repercussions, both politically and socially. I strongly concur to this view due to the limitations in the enactment of effective controls over such online networks in the near future.
