In many societies, there is a growing emphasis on individualism with people prioritizing their personal goals and desires over collective interests. Is this a positive or negative development?

In many nations, Individualism is on a rise where the uniqueness and autonomy of individuals are valued.  Many people nowadays perceive this to be more significant than that of living with shared interests. In my opinion, despite some marginal downsides, I contend that this trend is largely positive.

Critics of individualism often point to its harm on the unity among people. Historically, humans have survived due to their cooperation and shared ideas. If people are drawn to different ideas and priorities, then they may refrain from speaking or showing up for others. Not only this can cause concerns on the social fabric of a nation but also affect the cohesiveness among its citizens. This is particularly true in some cities of developed nations where people don’t care about any social issues near them unless they themselves are directly affected.

Nonetheless, this trend has brought along with it a culture of embracing diversity in perspectives and preferences. In such societies, rather than differentiating people on their language, ethnicity, ideas or emotions, everyone is accepted and respected the way they are. Moreover, these communities also thrive as they acknowledge individual ideas and achievements. This way of living is more prominent in Western countries. For instance, such nations even accept foreign immigrants to practice their religion and respect their beliefs.

In conclusion, many are of the preference of such living that prioritize individual interests over collective ideas. Although there are some minor demerits to this trend, I argue that individualism could act as a potential torch bearer to a harmonious culture and hence, is a positive development.
