In some societies, the role of a mother differs in some ways from the role of a father. Why do you think these differences exist? How might the parental role develop in the future?

The role of a mother is different from that of a father in many communities. These distinctions are majorly due to the gender stereotypes that were passed on from the previous generations. In the near future, such divisions in the parental responsibilities would undergo a phenomenal shift shattering all pre-set notions.

Many societies have their own concepts on the roles of both father and mother during their parenthood. It is the often considered as the sole responsibility of the women to take care of the children alongside managing the household chores while men to remain as the families’ breadwinner. Moreover, many do not take the time to analyse such notions on their moral and social correctness. In some parts of rural India, for instance, women carry their children with them when they travel over long distances to fetch water and often receive no help from their men.

Nonetheless, a significant reconstruction of parental roles is expected over the coming years. Not only would it be equitable for both genders but also might erase any boundaries between their responsibilities. After a few years, newer parents would undoubtedly question the morality of the older beliefs and check them from propagating further. This is particularly true as we hear of a recent trend of men leaving their jobs to look after the children, and such moves have previously only been from women.

In conclusion, in some societies, there have been some differences in the roles of a mother from the father. The prime reason behind this are the age-old beliefs and customary practices which are soon expected to be questioned for their relevance and hence, would be disregarded in the foreseeable future.
