Individual greed and selfishness have been the basis of modern society. Some people think that we must return to older more traditional values such as respect for the family and the local community in order to create a better world to live in. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The modern world is often characterised by greed and the pursual for selfish interests. Some people advocate for the lost values of respect for both the family and the community as an antidote to these adverse times. In this essay, I strongly contend this to be true owning to the tangible gains of revisiting traditional virtues
Nowadays, many youngsters do not have a healthy relation with their families and prioritise their own interests and needs. Embracing older values like respecting family aids the children in developing and nurturing social skills earlier from their homes. These include respect for elders, accepting diverse ideas and being empathetic to prefer common good over own happinesses. When these children become adults, they contribute positively to craft a society and a world with higher moral standards.
With each passing generations, people tend to care lesser for the others around them. Even when we throw away our old clothes or surplus food, we tend to not think of the people who are deprived of these in our vicinity. Upholding the lost virtue of respecting the local community would mean the acknowledgment of the people around us and being there for one another in the times of both good and bad. This is particularly true in the events of any disasters; where all the immediate responses are from the local community who take commendable risks to save others.
In conclusion, it is believed by many people that greed and self-centrism is the bedrock of the present society and that we must return to the virtues of the past. I strongly argue this statement to be legitimate emphasising the significance of such values in reversing the current negative trends and making the world a better place to live in.
