Students are concerned on the curriculum of the university courses they apply for. Many of them show willingness to learn multiple subjects apart from their major ones while others advocate that specialising for their qualification is more worthy of their time and focus. In my perspective, though both views have valid reasons, it is up to the discretion of students to take a well-calculated choice.
Students who prefer the inclusion of different subjects in their learning curriculum emphasis on the career advantages associated. People who have expertise in multiple areas could easily be trained in distinct areas and so, are more competitive in their job roles. Not only are such professionals highly valued in the industry but also are given steady growth in any company due to their broad expertise in different areas. This is particularly true given that many job positions today prefer candidates who have multi-tasking abilities and engage in various roles even if they are outside their major domain.
However, many students advocate the need to specialise in a particular subject by contending on the unemployment levels in today’s world. Candidates who pass out of the universities now experience intense competition to find a job. To secure employment, one has to showcase their expertise in their subject to a professional level. This is largely by aligning their efforts and time with their career trajectory that could transform them to be the experts of their field. Hence, if students acquire focused knowledge and skills supporting their qualification, they are least likely to remain unemployed.
In conclusion, many students contend on the need to include diverse subjects in their higher education courses although some perceive that it is more beneficial to focus all their time on their major subject. There are legitimate arguments supporting either claim; nonetheless, I believe that it is better for students to take their own decision keeping their career goals and the current job market in their mind.
