Many nations have made deliberate efforts to ensure that their male and female citizens are treated fairly. Some people contend that we have attained gender equality while others believe that we are nowhere close to it. In my opinion, though we have made notable progress to gender equality, women still face discriminations.
The people who advocate that the world is impartial to both genders emphasise on the remarkable achievements of women owing to their empowerment. Women, today, are increasingly taking up high-profile roles which were previously dominated by men and are performing in par with their male counterparts. Many women are now the leaders of various nations, top executives of fortune-500 companies as well as the officials of defence and space agencies. With women having a significant representation in many core sectors, they could ensure fair treatment for other women and hence, bridge major gender gaps.
Nonetheless, people who believe that we still have a long way ahead of achieving gender equality point on the many evidences of partiality towards women. In poorer nations, girls are provided with lesser opportunities for higher educations, are forced to marry at younger ages and to engage in household chores. A few of them engage in low-skilled jobs with low wages and no security. Even in affluent nations, not only are women given lesser pay than men for the same work but are also vulnerable to workplace discriminations. Therefore, we are still distant from attaining gender equality.
In conclusion, it is perceived by many people that we have achieved gender equality, but others argue this to be untrue. In my view, despite of some noteworthy advancements to gender equality, discriminatory practices towards women are still prevalent.
