Many supermarkets are selling more and more products that are imported from other countries instead of selling food that is locally sourced. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?
In recent times, the availability and consumption of foreign food products in many countries is on a rise. The major reasons for this trend are associated with the present-day lifestyle of the people. In my perspective, the trend is largely negative due to its adverse implications on the economy of the nation.
There has been a major transformation in the lifestyle of people all over the world in the last few decades. With increased buying power from higher incomes, people now enjoy and explore more opportunities such as abroad educations and international travels. Here, they are exposed to a variety of food products and diverse regional cuisines. People would, hence, buy these foods if they are made available in their nearest supermarkets. Therefore, more products would be imported from foreign nations owning to their popularity and preference.
Nonetheless, this shift is often associated with negative consequences to the nation’s economy. When more edibles are imported from foreign nations, local producers have to face stiff competitions that adversely affect their profits. With reduced sales and revenue from local produces, the growth of the local economy of the nation could be inhibited. In some nations, for instance, many local food producers failed to compete firmly with global markets and hence, lost their market revenue.
In conclusion, there is a recent trend where nations increasingly import foreign food products than promoting their native ones. The modern shifts in the living standards of people are the prime reasons of this trend. I strongly contend this to be a negative development in view of its detrimental impact on the economy.
