Some feel that punishment should focus more on rehabilitation instead of long prison terms. Others feel prison terms are important for social stability. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Every nation has their own established legal systems to punish the perpetuators. Many people are of the perception that this should be more concentrated on rehabilitation while others contend imprisonments to be more effective. Though both views are backed by legitimate arguments, I recommend rehabilitating petty criminals and isolating the heinous ones by long prison terms.

People who support the rehabilitation of criminals often empathize with the offenders. Many who were caught in crimes were victims of any societal concerns like poverty, discrimination, or unemployment. Hence, these supporters feel morally obliged to provide them the necessary means to live a normal life. Not only could this aid them to easily find a livelihood but also refrain from any wrong doings in the future. In Indian prisons, prisoners are given mandatory skill-based training in various workshops to accelerate their rehabilitation process once they are released.

Nonetheless, many prisoners have committed crimes out of deep mental and emotional issues, and some do not even acknowledge the gravity of their action. If they are not imprisoned, there are possibilities for them to indulge in similar offences in future. Therefore, there would be serious concerns on the safety of citizens when grave criminals assimilate into the normal society.  For instance, there are many notorious criminals in the world who are serial perpetrators and their mere presence among common people would rise societal tensions.

In conclusion, some people advocate rehabilitation of criminals than their imprisonment though many argue that prisons are imperative due to security reasons. Both these sides are supported by valid arguments, I contend that only those indulged in petty crimes should be considered for rehabilitation and all other criminals to be mandatorily isolated from the public.
