Fewer young people play sports these days. Why is this? What can be done to encourage more young people to do sports?

In recent years, the number of youngsters who engage in sports has declined significantly. The major reason for this trend is the advent of the internet which catalyzed the uprise of many online activities, and this shift could be reversed by various governmental initiatives.

Young people nowadays prefer to binge watch videos and play online games more than playing sports. With the surge of online streaming platforms, they have unlimited access to new films and series. These videos are highly engaging and can hold their attention for hours without them even realizing the time elapsed. Moreover, video games use high-end graphics to create life-like visuals with a reward system to trick young minds into playing more. This is particularly true in online games like FIFA where they can play as the avatar of their favorite footballer and compete to win world championships without moving their foot at all.

The government could take measures to encourage youngsters to participate in sports in schools. Sports could be included in the curriculum to educate them about their significance to physical and mental well-being. If schools and colleges are equipped with the latest amenities and qualified instructors, then quality training could be imparted to the students. Additionally, scholarships can be provided to meritorious students who excel at sports along with their academics. For instance, countries like China prepares their athletes for Olympics by selecting talented young players from schools and providing them with extensive trainings at world class facilities.

Recently, it has become common for young people to distance themselves from sports. Prime among the causes is their excessive fascination with video games and online videos. Nonetheless, the government could play a pivotal role in alleviating this concern by some early interventions.
